In this workshop, I would like to explore with the participants the many dances I learned and had contact with during my travels and life experiences in different countries. I learned many dances taught by teachers and friends from around the world; so I want to travel with you around the world, through dance. Some dance styles: Afro-tribal dances, Afro-Portuguese dances (Funana, Semba, Kizomba, Batuku), Latin dances (Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia), European dances (Polka, Hasapiko, Vira do Norte, ...), American Dances (Rock'n'roll, Lindy hop) among others. Each session will last 1h-1h30, according to the age. We will start by warming up and stretching, then according to time we will cover 3 to 4 dance styles with small choreographies and movements, ending with relaxation at the end.
Sofia Scheltinga is a citizen of the world. Born and raised in Portugal, half Dutch, lived in South Africa. Above all, a music lover, Sofia came into contact with dance, at the age of 17, when her mother took her to try ballroom dancing. She liked it so much that she was invited to take classes at the Alunos de Apolo school (a ballroom dance school in Lisbon) to develop the style and enter competitions. But she liked to dance for fun, so she immediately left competitions and discovered the world of dancing nights of Salsa and Kizomba in Lisbon's nightclubs. When she moved to the Netherlands for 4 years, she started taking African tribal dance classes at a world music association that would also become her workplace, as an event producer. With teachers from Uganda, Senegal and the Ivory Coast, she learned the different styles of afro dance. During the 1 year that she lived in South Africa, she not only gave dance lessons to the working community where she lived, but she also learned to listen to the new vibrations of Africa, like Afro-house and learned the famous Gwara-gwara South African. Back in Portugal, she took dance lessons again, tried Argentine Tango, Samba de Gafieira and Afro-house. Realizing the amount of dances she learned, and how good it was to travel the world through music and dance, she decided to combine all her knowledge and create this workshop in order to provide others with the travel experience she had. Come dance and see the world!
