Synopsis
Documentary about teenagers of African origin born in Portugal – 1998. In Portugal, there are boys and girls who have no homeland. They are not Cape Verdean because they have never been to Cape Verde, they are not Portuguese because the language is different and the customs here are not those of their families. They do not want to be Portuguese, perhaps they will become Cape Verdean. For now, they are from Pontinha, they are from Pedreira dos Húngaros, they are from Arrentela, they are from Miratejo, they are from Cova da Moura. They are from “the area,” they are from “the neighborhood,” they are “niggas.” They have borders, they have laws, they have languages, they have anthems, they have ideas, they have unmistakable codes. In fact, this is the very first time in 500 years of troubled relations between the Portuguese and Africans that the latter have given rise to an autonomous, affirmative, and avant-garde culture in Portugal. They are proud.
