Bio Comodoro Amigo

Comodoro Amigo is the project of multi-instrumentalist Rui Dinis, precipitated by the first confinement of 2020, making it his mantra: “resist through Art”. The musician and composer has had an artistic residency since 2015 in one of the most important cultural associations in the Algarve – Laboratório de Actividades Criativas (former Lagos jail), with the indie project “Staccato Limão”. Yes, it’s another project catalysed by the confinement dictated by the pandemic. But Comodoro decided to go further in the “Do it Yourself” concept imposed by the isolation: besides taking on the composition, recording and interpretation of all the themes, he literally put his hands to work, with the bricolage possible, acoustically transforming one of the rooms of his house into the production headquarters of this project. He also repaired his first keyboard – a naive Bontempi AZ1100 – and his first guitar, adding it to another one built from scratch with his father to, together with some instruments “on the shelf”, form the arsenal that gives this project an unmistakable aesthetic.

Notwithstanding the individual approach at the genesis of the project, live it is presented with a luxury class: keyboardist Lana Gasparotti (winner in her own name of the Festival Emergente 2021) and guitarist / bassist Pedro
Barroso (founding member of the renowned fusion big band Plasticine). The project also has 2 collaborations with visual artists: Cruzes (in the production of a joint video using only Instagram Stories) and NEVRO (by composing themes for 2 exhibitions in London and Milan).

Atari Hanzo | Album Synopsis

After unveiling the singles “Bretton Woods” and “Polaroid Android”, Comodoro Amigo will release his debut album “Atari Hanzo” on May 26, 2023, a date that will coincide with his live performance, which will take place at Associação LAC (Laboratório de Actividades Criativas), in the former Lagos jail, which has been transformed into a hub for artistic residencies.

As the label of Moreia Elétrica, Atari Hanzo is the celebration of a geek imaginary converted to pop culture. Not disguising his flirtation with a technological world in the age of “whys,” Commodore Amigo uses and abuses puerile, lo-fi electronics, but crossed with organic instruments, to color his debut album.

Despite some approximations to a retro aesthetic, this is not a project of nostalgia, only a project with memory. Perhaps because of this, the language has “retroactive effects”, but with contemporary applicability, not only through personalized production, but above all through the social scrutiny of words, which take center stage in this project.
