ROOTS 2024 > Guest Artist > Blackson Afonso (Angola)

Blackson (b. 1983) was born in Uíge, Angola. He has lived in Portugal since the age of 8. He studied painting in Budapest (2009-2012) and architecture in Lisbon (2012), where he currently lives and works.

With a constantly developing visual language, Blackson is inspired by the black body, which he represents in his paintings, and affirms in society. To this, he adds layers of color, creating sensations in the viewer that seem contradictory at first glance, but which combine harmoniously on the canvas. Between joy and melancholy, harmony becomes the motto of his work and his vision, where freedom and symbolism are recurring and central aspects of his works.

Currently, he has been experimenting with new media to express his art, such as tiles or installations.
